Fingernail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a common and highly contagious condition.

It has been found to affect approximately 10% of the general population, 20% of persons older than 60 years, and 50% of those older than 70 years. (1)

This fungus attacks nails from beneath, growing under and between the layers of nails until it forms an unsightly discolored thickening.

This article will discuss how to cure finger fungus fast.

Remember that this fungus is contagious, so it’s important to recognize the symptoms as early as possible.

Prevention is important too.

Here are some tips that you can follow

The earlier in life an infection occurs, the easier it is to cure. To avoid nail fungus infections and their complications:

  • Keep your hands clean
  • Do not go barefoot in areas where there are lots of people, such as swimming pools and gyms
  • Use a clean towel whenever you dry your feet.
  • Wear shower shoes in public areas such as gym locker rooms or showers after swimming.
  • Wear gloves when doing yard work and gardening or cleaning the house (to prevent exposure to household chemicals).
  • Keep your nails clean and dry. Wear gloves if you are using your hands in water for long periods of time (e.g., in gardening).
  • Do not use substances containing formaldehyde or ethyl acetate to strengthen your nails because they can be harmful to the nail plate, causing separations and permanent damage to the nail bed.
  • Keep your nails short in order to let the skin around them breathe and decrease the chance of infection.
  • Do not share personal items such as manicure tools, nail files, clippers, etc.
  • Change socks daily or multiple times per day if you have sweaty feet.

The problem is that a lot of individuals do not take their nails problems seriously.

They ignore the discoloration, or smell coming from their fingernails until it gets really bad. This is what you should NOT do:

Home Remedies To Cure Fingernail Fungus Fast

You can try a natural remedy to get rid of the fungus that has infected your nails.

Tea tree oil:

Tea tree oil is believed to have antiseptic properties and is used for topical treatment of fungal infections on skin, hair, and scalp.

It can also be applied directly on nails with an affected area (without getting it into contact with the surrounding skin, which can cause irritation).

How long does tea tree oil take to work on nail fungus?

Results vary, but most people see a marked improvement within 2 to 3 weeks.

Tea tree oil’s effectiveness relies on a couple of things: the strength of the tea tree oil and the length of treatment.

Gentle massaging with 1 or more drops is recommended every night before going to bed – but ideally for no less than 8 weeks.

To make tea tree oil, add a few drops of this essential oil into 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Massage it on the affected area and allow it to air dry (do not wash off).

After 2 hours or more, put on socks to let them soak in for the night. Do this daily for at least 8 weeks.

Can you apply tea tree oil directly to toenails?

Yes, some people have applied tea tree oil directly to their nails and seen great results.

But you should not do this, if:

a) You have open wounds or diabetes;

b) You are allergic to tea tree oil;

c) You notice that the product gives off a strong smell.

Baking soda has been used for a long time to improve the health of your nails and help them grow stronger and faster.

It is also an alkaline product that helps neutralize acids, which are commonly found in some types of nail fungus.

Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Apply this mixture to the affected nails and leave it for at least half an hour.

Rinse off and repeat every day until you see results (at least 3 times per week).

Clove oil:

Many people have used clove oil as a home remedy when dealing with nail fungus.

Clove oil contains eugenol, which is a type of phenolic that has antifungal properties.

While it’s not proven to work faster than other treatments, many people have said clove oil helps them to get rid of nail fungus and stop its recurrence.

How do you use clove oil for toenail fungus?

The process is easy. Mix 2 tablespoons of clove oil with 1 tablespoon of honey and apply the mixture to your infected nails every night before going to bed.

Wrap this in plastic wrap or a sock so you do not get the solution on your mattress or clothes.

Leave it for at least 8 hours (overnight).

Repeat this every day until you see significant improvements.

Garlic:

This herb has many health benefits, including its ability to treat nail fungus.

This is because garlic contains allicin and ajoene, two types of sulfur compounds that have antifungal properties.

How do you use garlic for fungus?

Garlic can be made into a paste and applied directly to the nails.

Alternatively, you can also make yourself some garlic tea: crush a few cloves of raw garlic and place them in hot water for 5 minutes or so. Strain, drink a few times daily until your symptoms subside (at least 3 times per week). You can also eat a few cloves of raw garlic each day.

How long does it take for garlic to cure toenail fungus?

Results vary, but most people see visible improvements after 1 to 2 weeks. This time also depends on the severity of your condition. Garlic’s effectiveness relies on how long you use it for.

Best results are when used for at least 3 weeks daily.

Also remember that garlic can be very strong for some people, so be sure to dilute it with plenty of water.

Another thing: garlic does have an odor – but this shouldn’t stop you from using it!

Repeat this every day until the nail looks healthier.

Food to avoid for fingernail fungus

• Sugar – Avoid eating excess sugar, which can help nail fungus grow.

• Alcohol – This product dehydrates the body and makes it easier for toenail fungus to infect you again. Consuming alcohol also weakens your immune system’s ability to fight off fungal infections altogether.

• White Rice – It’s best to cut down on your rice intake because it’s easy for yeast infections like toenail fungus to grow in this form of carb.

• Bread – Just like white rice, bread is also a source of sugar that can feed the fungus in your nails.

• Yeast (e.g., Bakers) – Similar to white rice and bread, yeast is also a source of sugar that can feed the fungus in your nails.
