Do you have tooth pain? If so, it may be due to tartar buildup on your teeth. There are many ways to remove tartar from teeth without visiting the dentist.
In this article, we will show you how to remove tartar from your teeth safely.
What is Tartar?
Tartar is a hardened substance that builds upon the surface of the teeth, especially near the gum line. It’s white or yellow in color and can sometimes become brown or black over time. The tartar actually consists of bacteria, saliva products, and food particles that have bonded together.
Tartar can cause problems such as bad breath and tooth decay. It also causes cavities, gum disease, and other health problems. Therefore, it’s important to remove tartar from teeth. If you wait too long to remove it, the buildup will be harder to get rid of.
However, we don’t recommend removing tartar from teeth by yourself at home. In fact, if you try to remove tartar from your teeth without a dentist, it can be very dangerous. If you’re worried about tooth pain or other problems, we recommend going to the dentist.
The only time we do recommend removing tartar from teeth at home is when there’s a serious problem and your dentist isn’t available. Common examples include:
If you do have a dental emergency, we recommend contacting the dentist after removing tartar from your teeth. You can call or go to their office so they can address any problems before it’s too late.

Note: We don’t recommend these methods of removing tartar from teeth because they can damage your tooth enamel and other parts of the teeth if done incorrectly.
If you’re looking for a safe way to remove tartar from teeth, we recommend using an oral irrigator (also called a water flosser) instead. If your teeth are very sensitive, though, you should brush them lightly with a soft toothbrush before flossing.
Another option is to use non-whitening strips to remove tartar from teeth naturally. They can also help remove plaque and prevent new tartar buildup. However, if your problem is serious, the strips won’t be able to get rid of the tartar completely.
Home Remedies To Remove Tartar From Teeth Without A Dentist
Here are some home remedies you can use to get rid of tartar on your teeth:
- Saltwater (for mild tartar). Fill a small container with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 8 ounces warm water. Swish the mixture around in your mouth for several minutes. Spit it out and rinse your mouth with water. Repeat once or twice per day until the tartar is gone.
- Baking soda (for mild to moderate tartar). Mix 1/2 teaspoon baking soda into 8 ounces of warm water. Swish it around in your mouth for one minute, then spit it out and rinse your mouth with water. Repeat once, twice, or three times per day until the tartar is gone. Brush your teeth lightly with a soft toothbrush before doing this to remove plaque.
- Hydrogen peroxide (for mild to moderate tartar). Pour 3% hydrogen peroxide into a small container. Gently dab the affected area of your teeth with cotton balls soaked in the solution. Let the cotton balls air dry for about one minute, then rinse your mouth with water. Do this once or twice per day until the tartar is gone. Don’t swallow the hydrogen peroxide because it’s harmful if swallowed.
- Listerine (for mild to moderate tartar). Gargle for 30 seconds with Listerine mouthwash that has at least 26.9% alcohol. Then, spit it out and rinse your mouth with water several times. Repeat once or twice per day until the tartar is gone.
- Toothpaste (for mild to moderate tartar). Apply a layer of toothpaste to the affected area of your teeth for one minute, then rinse off. Repeat once per day for one week. If this method succeeds, discontinue using it and see your dentist to avoid further problems.

- Toothpaste (for mild tartar). Use a soft toothbrush to brush your teeth lightly with non-whitening toothpaste that doesn’t contain peroxide or baking soda. Don’t scrub too hard since this can damage tooth enamel. Repeat this once per day for about one week, then see your dentist to avoid further problems.
- Wax (for severe tartar). Over a sink, put some wax onto the affected area of your teeth. Then wrap cotton gauze around the affected part of your teeth and tie it in place with string or dental floss. Leave the wax and cotton in place for 30 minutes, then remove it and clean your teeth with a toothbrush. Repeat once per day until the tartar is gone.
Note: It’s possible that you’ll have to do this treatment several times before the tartar disappears completely.
If these natural remedies don’t work, you should see your dentist. If you can’t afford to visit the dentist, ask your local dental office if they have any charity programs that might be able to help you.
