What is indigestion?

There are two types of indigestion: Functional and Organic.

  • Peppermint: Peppermint oil is often used to relieve stomach pain and indigestion. It’s thought to be very effective in calming the stomach muscles.
  • Fennel: Fennel seeds are often used to settle an upset stomach. They can be eaten whole or can be taken as tea.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is thought to be a good home remedy for indigestion because it can help to balance the stomach’s acid levels. It’s also believed to be a good probiotic.
  • Lemon: Lemons are thought to be very effective in settling an upset stomach. They can be taken as tea or in water.
  • Dill: Dill seeds and leaves are often used to settle an upset stomach. They can be eaten whole or taken as tea.

This yoga pose is good for indigestion because it helps to relieve gas and bloating.

1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.

2. Place a pillow under your knees for support.

3. Put your hands on your stomach, and as you breathe in, slowly raise your head and shoulders off the floor.

4. Hold this position for a few breaths, then slowly lower yourself back down to the starting position.

1. Eat smaller meals more often. Avoid eating large meals. If you do eat a large meal, sit down and take your time.

2. Avoid foods that trigger your indigestion. Common triggers include fatty or fried foods, spicy food, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and citrus fruits.

3. Don’t smoke. If you smoke, quit. Smoking relaxes the valve between the stomach and esophagus, which can lead to indigestion.

4. Avoid eating before bedtime. Give your stomach at least three hours before lying down after a meal.

5. Lose weight if necessary. Extra weight increases pressure on your stomach, which can contribute to indigestion.

6. Elevate your head when you sleep. Place blocks under the legs at the head of your bed to raise it six to eight inches. This will help keep acid from rising into your esophagus while you sleep.

7. Wear loose-fitting clothing. Clothing that fits tightly around your waist puts pressure on your stomach and can worsen indigestion.

8. Try over-the-counter antacids for relief. If home remedies don’t help, you can try over-the-counter antacids. These are available without a prescription and can be taken as needed.

9. See your doctor if your indigestion does not improve with home treatment. Indigestion is a common problem, but it can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, or gallstones. If you have any of the following symptoms, see your doctor:

• Vomiting blood

• Bloody or black stools

• Weight loss

• Difficulty swallowing

10. Try natural remedies. Some people find relief from taking herbs and supplements such as ginger, chamomile, lavender, and peppermint. These can be taken in the form of tea, capsules, or extract. Speak to your doctor before taking any herbs or supplements, as they can interact with certain medications.

Home remedies are often very effective in relieving the symptoms of indigestion. However, if your symptoms persist, it’s important to see your doctor to rule out any underlying health conditions.
