It’s no secret that coffee is a staple in most people’s lives. It wakes us up in the morning, provides an afternoon energy boost, and keeps us going until we go to bed at night.

But what if you’re trying to lose weight? Will drinking coffee every day make it harder for you to see your desired results?

Read on below as I break down everything related to this question so you don’t have to wonder any longer!

1. The first thing we need to know is how much caffeine there is in a cup of coffee.

A typical 12 oz serving contains about 95 mg of caffeine, which is less than many other sources such as soda or chocolate.

Some people will say that all those calories from sugar and fat cancel out the benefits of caffeine (which is not true as you will discover), but if that were the case we would see more people put at risk for obesity and heart disease from cola consumption than coffee, which isn’t the case.

2. Coffee doesn’t make you less productive:

Maybe you’ve heard this excuse before: “I can’t fall asleep before 3 AM because of all the caffeine I’ve been drinking.”

Well, it’s time to let you in on a little secret: coffee does not affect how long it takes you to fall asleep! In fact, a 2001 Caffeine Informer article talks about a study showing that more than 400mg of caffeine did not change how long it took for participants to fall asleep, their heart rate during sleep, or the amount of time they slept.

3. Coffee does not dehydrate you:

You may have heard that coffee is a diuretic and this means it will make you urinate more than usual so you will become dehydrated.  Well, research shows that’s just not the case. A 2005 study showed that coffee has no effect on hydration status, and a 2003 article in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition actually found that coffee drinkers were less likely to show dehydration than non-drinkers!

4. Coffee can give you energy:

Being tired all day is what keeps many people from achieving their weight loss goals. If you drink coffee, however, you will notice that it gives you energy and helps your brain process information faster.  It’s no surprise that the state of Oregon actually classifies caffeine as a drug because of its ability to improve mental function (see article here ).

5. Coffee can help decrease depression:

Many people will drink coffee with their breakfast or in place of lunch, not knowing that the caffeine it contains can actually decrease symptoms of depression.  An article published in The American Journal of Psychiatry states that this is because caffeine stimulates certain neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine (see article here ).

6. Coffee helps you live longer:

The benefits of coffee don’t stop at weight loss and depression management.  Another study conducted in 2004 found that the risk of dying from heart disease, diabetes, and even suicide was lower for people who drank two to four cups of coffee a day (see article here ).

7. Coffee is good for your liver:

Did you know that drinking coffee can decrease your risk of developing certain types of liver cancer?  A 2006 article in the journal Hepatogastroenterology talks about this exact finding.  But it gets better: another study showed that women who drank five or more cups per day had a 44% less chance of getting liver cirrhosis! (see article here ).

8. Coffee can boost your athletic performance:

While you may think of caffeine as something that wakes you up and increases energy, it also serves as an ergogenic aid when taken prior to a workout, because it boosts metabolism and provides extra fuel to muscles.

A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research showed that athletes who took caffeine anhydrous with creatine monohydrate were able to do significantly more reps over a 10 week time span than those who didn’t take it.

Coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, liver cancer, strokes, cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, gout, and chronic liver disease (hepatitis). This is mostly due to the antioxidants found in coffee.

But there’s more to it than that! Coffee contains caffeine, chlorogenic acids, magnesium, potassium, cafestol, and other beneficial nutrients.

Caffeine does not cause dehydration, has no effect on heart rate during sleep, and does not affect how long you sleep.

Coffee also decreases depression, increases athletic performance, and improves liver function! Though coffee is good for these things, the best way to get nutrients into your body is through food.

Cons of Coffee

Coffee has a lot of benefits, but it also has its downsides. If you have one cup a day with no refills, this is what you’re doing to your body:

1. Coffee contains a high amount of caffeine:  The average cup of coffee contains about 95 milligrams of caffeine! You might not think that’s a lot, but this stimulant is addictive and can cause you to crash if your body doesn’t get it.

2. Drinking coffee increases internal stomach acidity:  Various sources say the increase is anywhere from 20% to 100%. One study has found that too much caffeine can lead to heartburn

3. Coffee is dehydrating, which can lead to headaches:  Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it makes your body produce more urine. This increases water loss and can cause dehydration, but it’s only temporary.

There are also numerous other reasons to drink coffee! It decreases depression, boosts athletic performance, and protects your liver!

So what do you think?

Coffee has a lot of benefits but it also has its downsides. The benefits seem to outweigh the downsides, so go ahead and enjoy your cup!
